The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) is regularly following up the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) activities in South Asia. Recently, Mr. Jeeban Panthi and Mr. Dilli Ram Bhattarai from SEN participated to the Second CORDEX Science and Training Workshop at International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) from 27 to 30 August 2013. The workshop was jointly organized by ICIMOD, WMO-World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Monsoon Asia Integrated Regional Study (MAIRS), and Centre for Climate Change Research of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). The workshop was supported by the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) and WCRP. The workshop was focused on the following theme:

  • Evaluation of monsoon climate simulation in Hindu Kush-Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau region from multiple climate models (onset and withdraw, seasonal and intra-seasonal variability, flood, drought, heat wave etc.).
  • Assessment of downscaling techniques and their products in Hindu Kush-Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau region to understand uncertainties accompanying the regional climate projections and examine the feasibility of climate model results.
  • Bridging the gaps between end users’ needs and climate modeling communities, and meeting the requests of end-users (hydrology, agriculture, water resources, land cover and ecosystem, human health etc.) on downscaled products, with definition of data types, formats and resolutions, for vulnerability, impacts and adaptation analysis.
  • Training of operational departments and local policy makers in South Asia and supporting local/regional policy making as well as sustainable development by providing user friendly regional downscaling products for South Asia.

Here are the major outcomes of the workshop:

The First CORDEX South Asia workshop was organized from 17 to 20 October 2012 at IITM, Pune, India where Mr. Panthi and Mr. Piyush Dahal had participated.

Those workshops were of great importance to the young researchers as they can learn the new research technologies, incur with the thematic scientists. SEN will be using the CORDEX output in future for its ongoing couple of climate adaptation research projects.
